ABOUT ABOUT

Film Budgeting 101 - Led by Melissa J. Houghton and John Aaron

After you have your script, you will need a budget to bring the story to screen.  You're a creative, not a numbers nerd.  This workshop will help you embrace how developing your budget can help you get the right people to read your script, hire the crew you actually need, and start building your audience.  Whether you want to sell your script or produce it with your friends, you need the numbers to convince either to jump on board.  Yes, there will be spreadsheets.  No, you don't need a calculator.  Yes, there is time for questions.

John Aaron spent a career "telling a story with numbers" as a CPA before he became a screenwriter and playwright.  After leaving public practice he was the controller of a real estate development company where he was responsible for budgeting and monitoring the performance of its office buildings. John went on to do high level corporate financial and strategic planning. As a WIFV Board Member, he is committed to helping film makers understand the need and benefits of using budgets to help them realize their vision,

Melissa J. Houghton joined Women in Film & Video (WIFV) as Executive Director in August 2005.  WIFV provides more than 90 professional development programs per year covering the creative and business sides of independent mediamaking.  In order to provide this level of programming and direct service to members, Houghton works with numbers on a daily basis and loves to see them come together! Houghton has served on the boards of the DC Architectural Foundation, DC Film Alliance, and Wide Angle Youth Media.  She is currently a member of the WETA Community Council and the FAVS Advisory Board at George Mason University.
